A long-awaited victory of the physicists

On 2nd December, the All-Russian Student Tournament of Physicists 2015 finished at Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (Dolgoprudny, Moscow Region). The team from Voronezh State University has taken the first prize for the first time. Our University has been waiting for this victory for six years.

At the 2015 Tournament VSU was represented by the team "Rubicon" supervised by Nikolay Lysenko and Vsevolod Zhdanov (the captain – Yakov Breev). The team members had already become prize winners of the Tournament of Three Sciences 2014 and 2015. The All-Russian Student Tournament of Physicists 2015 began for the team dramatically: at the very first day of the Tournament the coefficient for the report was reduced to 2.6 instead of the usual coefficient of 3.0. However, it did not prevent the team from making it to the final from the second place due to the tasks being well carried out. Three teams, "Rubicon" (VSU), "Experience" (MIPT) and "Fractal" (NArFU, Arkhangelsk) took part in the final round this time. After a fierce battle our team snatched victory from the MIPT team by 0.4 points and won such a long-awaited first prize. The team members are going to represent our country at the International Physicists' Tournament (IPT) in Paris in 2016.

Nikolay Lysenko, VSU team supervisor, shared his impressions in the first hours after the victory:

"Our training began as far back as September when the team was being formed. Training sessions took place twice a week. The atmosphere, especially at MIPT, is just amazing. Around 100 of the most intelligent gifted and skilful physicists gather together in one place and think about the same problems. It was a really cool and friendly tournament as all the teams were, I think, happy for us”.

"Now we have taken a great responsibility for representing not only Voronezh and Voronezh State University but also Russia at the IPT in Paris in spring 2016. It is incredibly interesting!" noted Sergey Voishev, a member of the VSU winning team "Rubicon".
