On 4th December, the final of the second competition of innovative IT projects "IT in the Black Soil Region" took place in the conference hall of the main building of Voronezh State University. The event was organised by the Skolkovo Foundation, the National Research University Higher School of Economics, the Association of Information and Communications Technology Companies of the Voronezh Region and Voronezh State University.
The main goal of the competition is to discover, popularise and support innovative projects in the field of information technologies. To be accepted to the competition technological projects had to be based on the development and usage of information networking and cloud technologies and to refer to one of the following areas: information technologies in health care; information technologies in the agricultural sector; information technologies aimed at safety maintenance; e-commerce; strategic computer technologies and software. The panel of expert judges consisted of the representatives of the competition organisers and partners including Vladimir Zhuravlev, the General Director of OOO Tsentr elektronnykh uslug (the chairman of the judges), and Sergey Naumov, the Head of the Voronezh Region division of the All-Russian Non-Governmental Organisation of Small and Medium Enterprises "Russia's Support". The Skolkovo Foundation was represented by Sergey Shubin, the Director of IT Projects Development, and Vasiliy Sizov, the Head of the Sector "Enterprise and Commercial Software". The Higher School of Economics was represented by Dmitriy Aleksandrov, Professor of the School of Software Engineering of the Faculty of Computer Science, Dmitriy Vetrov, the Head of the Big Data and Information Retrieval School and Tamara Voznesenskaya, the First Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science. The Government of the Voronezh Region was represented by Artem Verkhovtsev, the Head of the Department of Communications and Mass Media. The panel of judges also included the representatives of the business community and the regional system of higher education.
Andrey Revkov, the First Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Voronezh Region, addressed the participants and the guests of the event with the words of welcome:
"IT projects are in great demand now. We all can feel it – both the developers and the professional community as a client. Russia needs its own innovative IT developments. In the past there was a barrier between the appearance of the idea, its development and the beginning of the project funding. Now the situation is changing. It proves that the Russian market can turn to Russian IT developments again."
"I'm glad to welcome the Skolkovo Foundation at VSU. The main topic today is information technologies. We have a lot of developers, companies' training centres and IT faculties. VSU houses corporate training centres of such companies as Atos and T-Systems. Such competitions as we have today open doors to the talented people, provide the motivation for self-fulfilment and help the academic community of the region to organise itself in the IT field", noted VSU Rector, Professor Dmitriy Endovitskyy in his welcoming speech addressing the participants of the event.
Several representatives of Voronezh State University became the finalists and winners of the prestigious competition "IT in the Black Soil Region". The projects of the VSU students from the Faculty of Computer Sciences, Ilya Kapranchikov ("Hardware-Software Complex for the Cultivation of Transplantable Tissues") and Konstantin Fisenko ("Information Tactile and Temperature Feed-Back System in Myoelectric Prostheses"), reached the final in the nomination "Information Technologies in Health Care". The project of the VSU student from the Faculty of Computer Sciences Yaroslav Arefyev "Information System of Equipment Control Optimisation at Forestry Engineering Plants" got through to the final round in the nomination "Information Technologies in the Agricultural Sector". The project of the VSU student from the Faculty of Computer Sciences Dmitriy Samotsvetov "Navigation System of Lane-Departure Control" was the best in the nomination "Safety Information Technologies". The project of the Head of the Laboratory of Information Technologies in Medicine of the Faculty of Computer Sciences Yaroslav Turovskiy "Oculus and Brain-Machine Interfaces in External Device Control Systems" won the first prize in the nomination "Strategic Computer Technologies and Software". Moreover, Aleksandr Sychev, an associate professor of the Department of Information Systems of the Faculty of Computer Sciences, won in the nomination "E-commerce" with the project devoted to his on-line service "The Golden Ring of the Black Soil Region".
"It's the first time I have taken part in this competition. "IT in the Black Soil Region" is very different from other similar events which I have participated in because it is an extremely prestigious venue for defending your project. This competition can really help to make any development a reality", noted the competition finalist Konstantin Fisenko, a VSU student from the Faculty of Computer Sciences.
"Taking part in such competitions is a serious motivation for further work on the project, it helps to find drawbacks and mistakes in the project and see possible ways of development. Next year I'm going to participate in the competition again and win", the competition finalist Ilya Kapranchikov, a VSU student from the Faculty of Computer Sciences, said.
It should also be mentioned that during the meeting with the VSU Rector Dmitriy Endovitskyy Sergey Shubin, the Director of IT Projects Development at the Information Technologies Cluster of the Skolkovo Foundation, supported the project to develop an educational laboratory facility "VSU Information Technologies Centre" which will be the core of the future IT cluster in the Voronezh Region. He also noted that the region has everything that is required for the development of the IT cluster including innovative developments which are in demand among both the Russian and foreign business communities.
