Between 28 September and 2 October, the Theatre of Equals took part in the international festival for amateur theatres “Theatre Begins” that was held in Saint Petersburg in the Mokhovaya training centre. Among the participants of the event were 20 companies from Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Armenia, Hungary, Sweden, Germany, and Canada.
The main programme was comprised of performances by eight theatre companies, including the Theatre of Equals with the play “Empty souls”. The play is a calling card of the Voronezh theatre and it was highly praised by the jury that had among its members the Honoured Artist of Russia, Gennady Smirnov and the People's Artist of Russia and the president of the festival, Alexandre Galibin.
The varied programme of the festival could offer something of interest to any participant of the event. During the 5 days, the actors had a chance to go sightseeing, see performances by their colleagues, to take part in a night quest and various contests, to attend specialised master classes, and to join a drama school.
According to the result of the festival, the play “Empty souls” took third place and the actors were awarded with a diploma and a coat hanger – the symbolic prize of the festival.
‘The festival is absolutely amazing! Its programme is full of events and it offers enormous opportunities to exchange experiences. Opinions differ and so do theatres and styles. Speaking of disadvantages of the event, we did not have a lot of time and Saint Petersburg is absolutely tantalizing! The organisation committee was wonderful. Any day you could meet a star somewhere in the canteen and have a chat with them, and ask for advice. This opportunity to talk to the jury members is a great advantage, by doing so you can learn about your mistakes and work on them,’ said Polina Bagina, an actress of the Theatre of Equals.
‘It was an on-the-spot decision to take part in the festival. We submitted the application and when we found out that we were accepted we had already forgotten about it. Of course, this victory means quite a lot to us. It proved once again that we are doing the right thing. We are sure that it will not be the last time we take part in the festival “Theatre Begins”,’ said Valeria Malamura, the director of the “Theatre of Equals”.
