Between 29 and 30 October, the 11th Voronezh region swimming championship was held in Voronezh. This year the tournament took place in the new swimming pool of Voronezh State University. It is a modern facility with 6 swimming lanes, a stainless-steel pool basin, an electronic timing system, and a gym. 181 athletes submitted applications for the competition and 157 swimmers took part in the event. The oldest participants among the women were Nadezhda Maleshina (81) and among the man were sportsmen from Lipetsk Alexei Raikov (87) and Gennady Logunkov (85).
During the opening ceremony, Vice Rector for Strategic Administrative Management Yury Bubnov addressed the participants with words of welcome. Then the six world-class athletes were awarded with prizes.
The competition was tough: at some distances the athletes were only 0.1 second behind the winner. However, the electronic timing system left no place for any doubt.
The 11th Voronezh region championship resulted in 10 national records: 5 personal and 5 relay records. All in all, 25 national record certificates were granted. The participation of strong competitors and the leading teams of the swimming federation, such as “Posiedon” and “Sprut”, made the competition even more intense.
The event finished with a fun relay race (4x50 feet-first backstroke) which brought the house down.
The competitions were held in VSU’s swimming pool for the first time, that is why the administration of the swimming pool carried out a wide range of works to provide all the necessary conditions for the event. Thanks to the Secretary of the competitions, a judge of the highest category, Svetlana Kuznetsova, the main program used during the tournament was MeetManager. Today, this is the program used by the national Federation and during all international events. Very few regional tournaments use software of the same level.
