16th International Song and Dance Festival

The 16th International Song and Dance Festival has started in Voronezh. It is an annual festival organised by the Department of Culture of Voronezh Government together with the International Education Institute of Voronezh State University, and timed to coincide with the Students’ Day. The festival’s slogan is “For international understanding! Against racism and violence!”. The objective of the festival is to encourage our society to be tolerant to people of other nationalities and beliefs.

The festival started on 26 November at Voronezh Cultural Centre with a concert by artistic teams of pupils from various schools, supplementary education programmes, and leisure and cultural centres of the city. Among the participants there were also representatives of national diasporas and communities of the Voronezh Region. They all performed national songs and dances. On 2 December, the University Hall of VSU is to hold a concert organised by international students from seven leading universities of Voronezh - the Institute of International Education Department of Voronezh State University, Voronezh State Medical University, Voronezh State Pedagogic University, Voronezh State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, the Zhukovsky and Gagarin Air Force Academy, Voronezh State Agricultural University, and Voronezh Institute of High Technologies. Among the participants there were students from Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Congo, India, Iraq, Indonesia, Columbia, Vietnam, China, Nigeria, Mozambique, Palestine, Mali, Montenegro, Benin, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, and many other countries.

The closing ceremony was held at A.L. Durov Voronezh Circus at 17.00, 6 December. In the entrance hall of the circus, craftsmen of various nationalities displayed their artistic works. The event also included thematic slide-shows and national games from all over the world. The festival closed with a concert by its winners and guests.

The total number of participants this year was about 1000 people representing cultures of over 50 countries.
