International Winter Open Cup of the Black Earth Region in Parliamentary Debate

On February 6th and 7th, International Winter Open Cup of the Black Earth Region in Parliamentary Debate was held at the Faculty of History. The tournament used the format of British Parliamentary debate adopted as the official style of world championships and Russian tournaments. It was organised by the Chernozemie Debate Club and the Faculty of History. The Debate is an intellectual game. Each team consists of two players whose task is to prepare a speech on a given topic within 15 minutes so as to prove their opinion to their opponents. The position of each team (for or against) is also predetermined, and not chosen by the players themselves.

The tournament includes 5 qualifying rounds, the semi-final, and the final. This year there were 32 teams from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Rostov, Voronezh, Kazan, Dnepropetrovsk, Kharkov, and Krivoy Rog. The Ukrainian delegation included 15 members – the highest number ever. The jury consisted of the winners of Russian and world tournaments.

The winners were the St.Petersburg team (German Khudyakov and Abdula Abdulaev). Alexander Zhuravlev (National Research University Higher School of Economics) became the best speaker, and Mikhail Pushkarev (Moscow State University) – the best judge.

– “Holding such tournaments at VSU has become a good tradition. It gives students from different cities an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to think logically, persuade other people, give strong arguments supporting their point of view, practice public speech and find new friends,” – said Denis Sosusov, Vice Dean for Student Affairs and Social Development at the Faculty of History.
