On 11th April, a delegation of the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences consisting of the Director of the Institute Alexey Gromyko and a leading research fellow of the Department of Social and Political Studies of the Institute Sergey Fedorov visited Voronezh State University. The visit began with a meeting between the delegation and the VSU's Rector Dmitry Endovitsky. The visit was aimed at developing a partnership between the Institute of Europe and VSU and developing mutually beneficial cooperation in different areas of the universities’ activities.
‘Germany has had the German Alumni Association (DAWU) for a number of years, and we also founded the British Alumni Association a month ago. Among our other achievements are Centres of the Russian language that we have opened in some European countries: Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg (Germany), Leon University (Spain), and a university in Lille (France). We are involved in active collaboration with European countries – Ambassadors of different European countries are frequent guests at VSU, for example just a couple weeks ago the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Switzerland to the Russian Federation Pierre Helg visited our university and we discussed our cooperation in research and education,’ said the university Rector Dmitry Endovitsky.
‘Our cooperation has a long history: VSU has had a regional department of the Association of European Studies for many years. This is the only public research organisation in Russia that brings together specialists in European Studies. The Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences that was founded in 1987 also carries out European research, studying the territory from Lisbon to Vladivostok. Additionally, the Institute is involved in active cooperation with the Russkiy Mir Foundation where I examine European projects. From my conversations with my colleagues who consider applications for grant competitions I know that Voronezh State University has been doing a lot in this area. We are eager to assist you in development of European Studies in your university – one of the largest Russian centres conducting research in this area. I would also like to say that our Institute is engaged in promotion of the Russian language within the Russian and French Network University that was established in January 2016 and we would like to see your university among expert universities of the project,’ responded Alexey Gromyko.
The parties also discussed opportunities for further cooperation. Moreover, VSU was invited to take part in the celebration ceremony of the 25th anniversary of the Association of European Studies that will take place the following year. Alexey Gromyko praised Voronezh State University for its considerable contribution to development of European studies in Russia and suggested organising an event dedicated to the anniversary of Voronezh State University aimed at boosting cooperation between Russian and European educational institutions.
At the end of the meeting the parties concluded an agreement for cooperation, providing for joint research, joint educational, research and methodology conferences, exchange of academic and scientific literature, internships for academic staff and researchers of the Faculty of International Relations of Voronezh State University and practice training for students of the Faculty of International Relations.
The following day, 12th April, Director of the Institute Alexey Gromyko and a leading researcher of the Department of Social and Political Studies of the Institute Sergey Fedorov gave a lecture for students of the Faculty of International Relations of Voronezh State University. Alexey Gromyko discussed with the audience the European Union issues and controversies, and Sergey Fedorov talked about the political situation in France. The lectures were of great interest to the audience who asked the speakers many questions.
