On 16 May, a round table discussion under the title “AIDS and HIV prevention in Russia” was held in the conference hall of the main building of Voronezh State University. The event was dedicated to the World remembrance day of AIDS victims. Among the participants of the discussion were students and academic staff of Voronezh State University. The round table was organised by the VSU’s Psychological Consulting Services.
The goal of the event was to attract attention to the problem of the spread of HIV infections and their prevention. The participants of the meeting learnt about the basic principles of HIV prevention and early diagnostics techniques.
Oleg Grishaev, vice-rector for Student Affairs and Social Development, addressed the audience with words of welcome. He emphasized that the topic under discussion is of great importance and that students have to be aware of the danger.
The programme of the round table discussion also included a speech by Tamara Sitnik, the deputy chief doctor for epidemiology from Voronezh regional clinical centre for AIDS prevention and control. She provided the audience with the HIV statistics for Russia and the Voronezh region. The head of the the Department of Pharmacology of the Faculty of Pharmaceutics, Anna Buzlama, gave a talk under the title “AIDS – forewarned is forearmed”. The psychologist from the health centre of Voronezh students’ municipal out-patient centre №15, Marina Gavryushina, talked about prevention of HIV infections, and the Associate Professor of the Department of Organic Chemistry of the Faculty of Chemistry, Yury Kovygin, gave an overview of psychoactive substances. A social worker from Voronezh regional narcological dispensary, Andrei Zhiltsov, touched on the problem of drug abuse.
