From Rome to Voronezh: internalization of higher education

Between 27–31 March, the first coordination meeting for the international project “Developing Approaches to Internationalisation Strategy Harmonising in the Area of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation in the EU, Russia, Belarus, and Armenia (HARMONY)” was held in the Sapienza University of Rome (Sapienza – Università di Roma, Italy).

The project is jointly coordinated by the University of Seville and Voronezh State University. It is aimed at boosting the attractiveness of systems of higher education of the countries involved in the project, and promoting the universities on the European educational market. The goal of the project is to develop the mechanisms of the internationalisation strategy, harmonising them with due consideration for national interests of the countries involved (the EU, Russia, Belarus, and Armenia).

Representatives of all project participants took part in the coordination meeting: the University of Seville, Aston University (Birmingham, Great Britain), Kassel University (Germany), the Sapienza University of Rome (Italy), Polytechnic Institute of Tomar (Tomar, Portugal), Alexander Technological Educational Institute (Thessaloniki, Greece), Voronezh State University, the Southern Federal University, Penza State University, Analytical Centre for International Science and Technology and Educational Programmes (Moscow), Eurasia International University, Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University, Belarus State University, and Belarus Trade and Economics University of Consumer Cooperatives.

The event was opened with the signing of a multilateral cooperation agreement between partner university of the project. The signing process will continue in the Voronezh State University with participation of the ambassador of the European Union in the Russian Federation, his Excellency Vygaudas Ušackas, during the international forum "European Higher Education Area: Ways of Development", which will take place in VSU between 17 and 19 May 2017.

The meeting included a training session aimed at the presentation of such aspects of the higher education internalization as the development and the implementation of the internationalization strategic plan, structure and functioning of the international activities management, the development and the implementation of joint educational programmes and joint research supervision, organisation of scientific and technological cooperation, and technology transfer. Among the speakers were the coordinator of the Italian Bologna process expert team, the Head and employees of the International Department of the Sapienza University of Rome, Director of the Research Department, and the Head of the university's Technology Transfer centre.

Voronezh State University was represented by the leading specialists from the International Projects and Programmes Office, Anna Nedzelskaya and Anastasia Chepelevskaya. At the meeting, VSU employees presented the first year results of the consortium, as well as the plans for the future, that included deadlines for each project task. They also presented the programme of the discussed draft programmes for the international forum "European Higher Education Area: Ways of Development".

The Sapienza University of Rome is the first university in Rome and one of the oldest universities in Italy and the world.
