The Federal Student Tournament of Three Sciences – brining science and business together

Between 26 and 30 September, Voronezh held the final of the Federal Student Tournament of Three Sciences, one of the last such events in 2018.

The Tournament of Three Sciences is a chance for students to find a job conforming to their research interests and talents. The aim of the tournament is to organise a platform for collaboration between science and business in order to solve various problems. The participants are required to solve a number of science problems given to them before the regional stage, which usually takes place in Spring. Each problem requires an unusual approach as it has not been yet solved either by science or industry. Employers find this approach quite interesting, and each year the tournament gains more and more partners.

“Our primary goal is to find students we would like to invite for internships. I have seen several scientific battles. One of them was dedicated to our problem, and it was really fascinating to see the solutions suggested by the students. It is also very good that students from all over the country take part in the tournament. There are students from Ulianovsk and Saint Petersburg here, and we have our divisions in those cities, and even job vacancies. At the end of the tournament we selected several students to complete internships in our company, and we’ve already started working with them”, – said the brand manager of the company Mars Olesya Chernenko.

Students present their solutions to the scientific problems during a scientific battle. One team takes the role of a reporter and defends their solution, another team acts as an opponent and tries to find the drawbacks of the suggested solution, and the team becomes a reviewer who summarises the arguments. The jury includes scientists and representatives of partner companies. This helps to carry out a comprehensive analysis of each problem from an interdisciplinary angle.

The tournament is also a communication platform for enthusiastic young people. It helps to develop their soft skills.

“The tournament gives us an opportunity to do our best. It is a unique scientific and social experience. It teaches us, as future researchers and developers, not to be afraid of presenting our ideas, to defend our projects and to assess the job done by others. It is a professional experience”, – said Kristina Bogdanova, the captain of the team “Kvastsy” from Saint Petersburg Polytechnic University.

This year’s finalists were teams from Barnaul, Moscow, Novosibirsk, Saransk, and Rostov-on-Don. The main prize was a trip to the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Science near the village of Arkhyz. It will include guided tours, mountain hiking tours, master classes in astrophotography, lectures on astronomy, and a course in celestial orientation.
The winner of the heated scientific discussion was the “Beavis and Butt-head” team from the Southern Federal University.

“We won thanks to good teamwork and a brilliant presentation by our team’s speaker in the final round. We have been working very hard, and we are not going to stop here”, – said the captain of the team Alexander Demidov.

The tournament is a team competition, but the jury also assess the performance of each player and select the best ones in such nominations as the best player, the best reporter, the best opponent, and the best reviewer. This year’s best player is Dmitry Gorbunov, a member of the team of Ogarev Mordovia State University (Saransk) “Monte Carlo Method”.

This year the tournament was financed by the Presidential Grants Foundation. It was also the winner project of at the National Competition of Projects by Young Scholars for higher education institutions organised by the Federal Agency for Youth Affairs and the Youth Resource Centre. The co-organisers and key partners of the Tournament are the Department of Education, Science, and Youth Policy of the Voronezh Region, National Club of Young Researchers, the Voronezh Region Youth Government, and Grazhdanskoye Sobranie Lider. Among the federal partners and prospective employers are the Fund for Infrastructure and Educational Programs RUSNANO, OOO LUKOIL-Chernozemienefteprodukt, GK EFKO, the company Mars, AO Concern Sozvezdie, EkoNiva-APK holding, and the company DataArt. The federal career partner is the federal independent inter-university project Stazhirovka.ru.

The next tournament will begin in Spring 2019.
