On 9 November, graduates from Voronezh State University from various years, members of the German Alumni Association (DAWU) gathered together at the Russian Culture and Research Centre in Berlin to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the society.
Many thousands of German students have studied at VSU. The German Alumni Association has been organising alumni reunions and trips to Russia since 1999. This year, the meeting gathered over 55 VSU graduates.
“The number of DAWU participants has considerably grown recently. We express our gratitude to VSU Rector, Dmitry Endovitsky, and to the administration of the university for their support of our Association. During the meeting, a proposal was made to extend cooperation between VSU, DAWU, and the Russian Culture and Research Centre in Berlin. The first step can be the organisation of public lectures on contemporary Russian literature in Berlin,” said an Honorary Doctor of VSU, the graduate of the Faculty of Chemistry at VSU, the Head of the chemical/industrial technopark Dow Olefinverbund GmbH Leiter ValuePark (Germany), initiator of the German Alumni Association, Klaus-Dieter Heinze.
“My husband, Jürgen Voigt, studied at the Faculty of Chemistry between 1968 and 1973. And I studied at the Faculty of Philology in 1969–1970. 20 years of regular meetings have made our group really friendly and united. The official part of the meeting we dedicated to progress reports and the discussion of plans. The Sybirsky folk music group performed for us. We left the meeting late with warm memories about the days of our youth,” said a DAWU member and student of the Faculty of Philology at VSU, Gabriele Voigt.
Voronezh State University has paid special attention to the development of cooperation with Germany. Former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Russian Federation, Ulrich Brandenburg, is an Honorary Doctor of VSU and has visited the university many times. What is more, we have German companies in the Voronezh region: T-Systems, which opened a corporate training centre at VSU, and Atos IT Solutions and Services. Its corporate centre was once a strong argument in favour of the construction of the “Siemens Transformers” plant in the Voronezh region. The Department of ERP Systems and Business Processes Management was opened at the Faculty of Applied Mathematics, Informatics, and Mechanics.
In 2015, Voronezh State University held the German Alumni Association (DAWU) Forum.
