On 29 March, on the first day of the economic forum in Krasnoyarsk Science Slam, a battle between young researchers took place. The event was organised by the Fund for Infrastructure and Educational Programmes and Science Slam Russia Association with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and Siberian Federal University in the framework of the first federal project aimed at the popularisation of science. The Science Slam Association was represented by VSU students and staff.
The format of the battles helps young researchers present their project in front of a big audience including their potential customers. What is more, it is a wonderful opportunity to improve their projects, to add an interdisciplinary aspect to it, and to find teammates and even investors.
A special guest of Science Slam Kransnoyarsk was the First Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, Grigory Trubnikov. According to the First Minister, Science Slam is a successful tool of science popularisation: “Unlike traditional academic formats, which probably are not for any person, Science Slam is understandable for a wider audience. As for the researchers, it gives them a chance to learn to talk about complicated things in a simple way and explain their ideas in a limited period of time. This skill is useful not only for Science Slam.”
Among the competitors of the event were five slammers representing Krasnoyarsk universities and of the Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences. They had five minutes to tell the audience about their research in a simple and entertaining way. The winner, who was chosen by the volume and duration of the audience applause, was announced by Elena Sanarova, the Managing Director for Corporate Communications and Public Relations at “UK ROSNANO” and the Managing Director for External Communications of the Fund for Infrastructure and Educational Programmes. The best slammer was a senior lecturer from the Institute of Mathematics and Fundamental Informatics of Siberian Federal University, Mikhail Rybakov. According to the audience, he was the best at explaining mathematical methods used at the analysis of vital life processes. Sergei Philippov, the Head of the popularisation division of the Fund for Infrastructure and Educational Programmes of ROSNANO awarded the slammer with the sought after prize, the gloves, which are the symbol of the victory.
The event was organised by the Science Slam Voronezh team: representatives from Voronezh State University, Dmitry Kouda, Elizaveta Moshurova, Anastasia Kondratieva, and a student from Voronezh State Technical University, Alexader Tishukov. They worked in the framework of preparing to the National Science Slam which will take place in autumn 2019 in Voronezh. Between 17 and 20 October, slam organisers from all over Russia will come to discuss the work of the association and to hold a national scientific battle.
