On 8 December, the Minister of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, Olga Vasilyeva, visited Voronezh State University.
During her visit she took part in the meeting of the organisation committee for the 100th anniversary of Voronezh State University, organised by the Government of the Voronezh Region. The chairman of the committee is the Governor of the Voronezh Region, Alexey Gordeev, and Olga Vasilyeva is the co-chairman. The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council, senator Galina Karelova.
“VSU has a long history. It attracts prominent scholars. In the past few years VSU has become one of the leading universities in the Central Black Earth Region. I believe that such universities should be regional intellectual centres. Active collaboration of higher education institutions with local and regional authorities and business community is vital for the development of education and science and the region” said the minister.
Olga Vasilyeva also announced that the Ministry of Education and Science would support the festive events at the university, and provide VSU with 100 million roubles for the new equipment.
Galina Karelova believes that young people should take an active part in the preparations for the celebration.
“We all want to do more than just to celebrate, we want VSU students to feel how important the event is. 100 years means a long history, a great number of people, scientific achievements - a history that is a part of the history of the whole country” she said.
The VSU Rector told the meeting about the preparations, those which have already been completed, and those which we still have to do. He listed the tasks we need to fulfil and talked about the planned events for the celebration. The programme includes a reunion meeting for graduates, documentaries and animated movies about the university, charity concerts, reconstruction of the Botanical Garden, and the enhancement of university facilities. The anniversary will be celebrated in 2018 on the Day of the City.
“We preserve the key principles of a classical university and this allows us to introduce innovations, to serve as a cultural centre, and to be the driver of the social life in the region at the same time. One of the most important events for us in our centenary year will be the opening of an engineering centre” said Dmitry Endovitsky.
The university is also planning to pay more attention to the campus facilities in the coming year. One of the major goals is the renovation of buildings and facilities, such as the university canteens, purchase of new equipment for conference and concert halls, which will be used during the celebrations and will make the university an attractive platform for organising large conferences and forums. The reconstruction of the Botanical Garden has already been started. VSU partners are also actively participating in the preparations and contribute to the development and renovation of the university.
Dmitry Endovitsky also presented the programme that VSU has prepared for the contest for the creation of the centre for innovative, technological, and social development of the region, which was selected by the Ministry of Education and Science. He emphasised that the university’s policy is to establish close relations with business community. VSU implements several joint programmes with large enterprises. VSU has submitted an application to be included in the consortium of flagship universities supported by GK Rosatom. It is a union of higher education institutions that coordinated activities in higher, postgraduate and vocational education, and research beneficiary to the atomic industry.
