On 4 April, international scientific conference “Europe in the 21st Century: New Challenges and Ways of Development” started in the main building of Voronezh State University. The event was organised by the Department of Regional Studies and International Economies of VSU’s Faculty of International Relations, the Government of the Voronezh Region, and Association of European Studies.
The conference is held in the framework of an Erasmus+ programme (Jean Monnet Actions). Among the participants of the event were university staff, students from the Faculty of International Relations, representatives of the regional government, scientists from the leading Russian universities, and guests from abroad, i.e. representatives of VSU’s partner universities.
The participants of the conference were welcomed by the Vice Rector for Research and Innovations, Vasily Popov, Deputy Secretary General of the Governor and Voronezh Regional Government, Andrey Zhigulsky, the President of the Association of European Studies, Director of the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Honorary Doctor of VSU, Alexey Gromyko, Director of the Investment and Strategic Projects Agency in the Voronezh region, Danil Kustov, the Head of the International Cooperation Administration, and the Dean of the Faculty of International Relations, Oleg Belenov.
‘I hope today’s discussions will be important and useful not only for our colleagues and experts but also for students from the Faculty of International Relations. The interactions with highly qualified specialists who are going to give talks today will help them to build the unique picture of the world that reflects real life. Such conferences are a new development area for our university which will help us to develop the training of undergraduate and postgraduate students and to conduct extensive research in International Relations,’ said Vasily Popov.
Alexey Gromyko welcomed the audience on the behalf of the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Association of European Studies. He pointed out that European studies develop quickly and efficiently at VSU. Annually, the university becomes a platform for communication between Russian and international colleagues. The discussed topics are attracting more and more attention. Alexey Gromyko expressed his hope for strengthening the cooperation with the university.
Danil Kustov noted that Voronezh State University favourably influences the investment environment in the Voronezh region. International companies will not be able to implement their projects without the highly qualified specialists who are trained at VSU.
Oleg Belenov reminded the audience about the importance of discussing the issues regarding European research and thanked the international colleagues for coordinated strategic decisions which contribute to building favourable relations between countries.
The welcoming speeches were followed by the report “European Studies at the Department of Regional Studies and International Economies of VSU’s Faculty of International Relations” which was presented by Professor Alexander Udovichenko. The personal assistant of the provisional governor of the Voronezh Region, Boris Zubenin, presented the audience with the data concerning foreign economic relations of the region. Director of the Investment and Strategic Projects Agency in the Voronezh region, Danil Kustov, continued the topic. He provided information regarding investment potential of the region. He presented a number of projects which had already been implemented in the Voronezh region, including several industrial parks: “Maslovsky”, “Liskinsky”, “Bobrovsky”, and “Perspektiva”.
After that, Alexey Gromyko presented his report “Europe in the Global World. The Destiny of National States”. He touched on a number of controversial topics which are now being discussed at the international level.
Among other speaker were representatives of international partner universities: professor from the Faculty of Theology of the University of Göttingen, Martin Tamke, research fellow from the International Management Department at the FH Joanneum University of Applied Sciences, (Graz, Austria), Ruppert Bainhauer, and a lecturer from the Faculty of Marketing of the International Open Sup'Management University (Fez, Morocco), Assia Zeru.
The conference concluded on 5 March at the Department of Regional Studies and International Economies in building №4 of VSU, where two panels “Shadow economy” and “Migration and International Communication” were held. During the events, international colleagues and researchers from Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Research Institute of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia, and the Centre of Comparative Social and Political Studies of the Department of Comparative Political Studies of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences continued discussing urgent issues with the students from the department.
It should be noted that on 3 April a meeting was held between the Head of the International Cooperation Administration, and the Dean of the Faculty of International Relations, Oleg Belenov, and the Head of the Department of Regional Studies and International Economies, Alexander Udovichenko, with the delegation of Sup'Management University (Fez, Morocco). The Moroccan university was represented by the Deputy Head of the International Cooperation Administration, Otzman Idrissi Erkik, and a lecturer from the Faculty of Marketing Studies, Dr Assia Zeru. The participants of the meeting discussed the possibilities of cooperation between the Department of Regional Studies and International Economies (the Faculty of International Relations) and Sup'Management University.
