The Faculty of Biomedical Sciences take part in Global Big Day

On 5 October, staff members and students from the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences participated in Global Big Day, a worldwide birding event that traditionally takes place at the last weekend in September or first weekend in October.

This event is held annually all over the world. Its main goal is to draw attention to birds and their world, as well as the conversation of their natural habitats and other environmental issues. This environmental festival involves competitions between participating countries: who can spot the most species of birds, who registers the most specimen, which country has the most participants. In our country, this event is coordinated by the Russian Birds Conservation Union. The autumn bird count is lot of fun. What’s more, it is of great importance for science.

Voronezh State University, represented by its staff members and students, has always taken an active part in the organisation of Global Big Day. This time, VSU Botanical Garden and the Central Park for Recreation and Leisure were chosen as birding spots.

“Although the weather was not very nice we decided against calling off the excursion. And we didn’t regret it as we had a chance both to count birds and to enjoy the breathtaking autumn landscapes,” said Evgeny Aksyenenko, Associate Professor from the  Department of Zoology and Parasitology.

The data collected on that day will be sent to the coordinating centre of the Russian Birds Conservation Union for processing and will contribute to the Eurasian bird count.
