On 4 March, the governor of the Voronezh Region, Alexander Gusev, had a meeting with the rector of VSU, Dmitry Endovitsky. They discussed the prospects of opening of a regional centre for research and education within the framework of the May Presidential Decree and implementation of the national project “Science”.
The governor and the rector agreed that our region can successfully host such a centre, Voronezh universities have by now reached a high level of competence. Representatives of the business community as well as research institutions of the Russian Academy of Science agreed to participate in the project. The idea is currently being discussed with our colleagues in Moscow. The centre will specialise in such areas as genetics, chemistry, mathematics, and information technologies. The idea is to be discussed at a strategic meeting at the Higher School of Economics on 12 April.
The governor of the Voronezh Region assigned VSU Rector to develop a project of the centre for research and education and submit a corresponding proposal. He also said that he was willing to lobby the proposal on the federal level.
The meeting also discussed the issue of commemorating an outstanding Soviet and Russian scientist, Zhores Alferov, a Nobel Prize laureate in Physics, an Honorary Doctor of VSU, and a Full Member of the Academy of Sciences. VSU's rector suggested naming one of the university's laboratories after the famous physicist.
