International Translation Day 2020

On 30 September, the Faculty of Romance and Germanic Philology of VSU celebrated International Translation Day. This year the celebration was held online in order to maintain social distancing because of the pandemic, but it still allowed the staff members to be true to their traditions and to come together to create a festive atmosphere.

Elena Alexeyeva, Head of the Department of French Philology, Director of the Regional French Centre, and chairman of the Voronezh regional office of the Union of Translators of Russia, Larisa Kuzmina, Head of the Department of Translation and Professional Communication, Pavel Palazhenko, interpreter and press secretary of the Gorbachev Foundation, and the faculty’s lecturers and students congratulated the first year students.

International Translation Day was first celebrated at the Faculty of Romance and Germanic Philology of Voronezh State University 18 years ago. Vyacheslav Kashkin, Head of the Department of Theory of Translation and Intercultural Communication, who established this wonderful tradition in 2003, was the first organiser and host of this event. The main participants of the festival are first year students of the translation programme who make a greeting card from their group and present a performance act.

On Translation Day, the first year students from English, French, German, and Italian departments usually gather together in the auditorium. The official part of the event includes congratulations of the guests, translators, and lecturers of the faculty. Traditionally, the students are told about the patron saint of all translators Jerome of Stridon, and after that, the informal part of the festival begins. First year students give funny performances, sing songs, read poems and their translations in different languages to music, and it all ends with a dynamic flash mob. The climax of the festival is the initiation of the first year students into translator students. The host reads the text of the translator’s oath, and the students repeat “I swear!” together. Traditionally, the start of the translation competition for students of Russian universities, once initiated by Professor Vyacheslav Kashkin, is announced on the Translation Day. Thanks to the active organisational activities of the lecturers of the Faculty of Romance and Germanic Philology and the support of the faculty and university’s administration, this competition has been held for many years.
