Analytical chemistry: combination of economy, ecology and social issues

The Department of Analytical Chemistry of Voronezh State University has developed several interesting innovative technologies. For many years the Department has been working with chromatographic methods of analysis and solving various problems concerning ecology, medicine and chemical industry.

The Head of the Department Professor Vladimir Selemenev said, "Economy, ecology and social issues should be effectively combined. Only in this "triple union" it will be possible to implement any technology we have developed successfully. For example, we can use sorption and ion-exchange processes, which we study, to minimise the production wastes."

The scientists of the Department have proven that lots of highly valuable substances can be produced from production wastes. In particular they have developed and patented the technology of producing seven major phospholipids from wastes of oils and fats production. These substances are extremely expensive (the world market price for 1 gram is approximately 2000 dollars) and they are used as pharmaceuticals and biologically active additives for complete nutrition. Nowadays the issue of manufacturing implementation of this technology is being negotiated with industrialists of Voronezh Region and the nearby ones.

Production technology of amino acids and nucleic acids from rinse and waste water of yeast industry is another interesting innovation, which was developed by the research team of the Department. According to our scientists, in half a year the expenses on the commissioning of the nucleic acid extraction facility can be fully covered (this acid is not less expensive than phospholipids). As a final product it gives clear water, which can be reused in production and there is no need to use water from the city pipeline.
