On 10 October, Professor Jagatisha Gupta Kapughani, the Head of the laboratory of the Institute of Biotechnology (New Delhi, India) gave a lecture “The role of nitrogen oxide in adaptive responses of plants to hypoxia and submersion tolerance” which was held in the conference hall of the main building of Voronezh State University. The audience included lecturers, postgraduate and undergraduate students from the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences of Voronezh State University.

The event started with a welcoming speech of Alexander Eprintsev, the Head of the Department of Biochemistry and Cell Physiology of the Faculty of Biology and Soil Sciences of Voronezh State University:

“This day is very important for the scientific life of our university. Talks by Professor Gupta who heads the largest research laboratory in India have always been very educative and interesting. This Indian scientist is famous all over the world for his studies of the life of plants in extreme conditions”.

“A few days ago we listened to Professor Gupta’s presentation at a conference dedicated to post-genomic technologies. However, we did not have enough time to learn in more detail about the research headed by this scientist. I am sure this lecture will fill the gap so that everybody who is interested in the problem will be able to learn something new,” said Oleg Kozaderov, Vice Rector for Research and Innovations.

The lecture, which was given in English, was dedicated to the most difficult problems of metabolic changes in plant cells under conditions of oxygen deficiency. A considerable part of the lecture was focused on the functioning of the heamoglobin and nitrogen oxide cycle which was discovered in cooperation with Andrei Igamberdiev, a graduate of the Faculty of Biology and Soil Sciences of Voronezh State University and a professor at the University of Newfoundland (Canada).

The audience showed a lot of interest in Professor Gupta’s talk among other things thanks to the professionalism of Andrei Igamberdiev who interpreted the lecture. A proposal by Alexander Eprintsev and his Canadian colleague to conduct joint research with the help of post-genomic technologies also attracted a lot of interest.
