On 12 November, VSU celebrated the 103rd anniversary of the first lectures held at the university. On that day in 1918, students from four faculties, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of History and Philology, and the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, attended their first lectures at Voronezh University.
On this occasion, the ceremony of laying flowers at the commemorative plaque dedicated to the founders of the university was held at VSU. VSU Rector Dmitry Endovitsky congratulated the university staff and students and talked about how it all began.
“Although it’s been 103 years since that day, there are still heated discussions whose participants try to answer the question: who was the founder of the university? VSU professors Kostin and Karpachev have different opinions: Professor Kostin, a mathematician, says that VSU, that has changed the cultural landscape of Voronezh, was opened during the times of Soviet Russia in 1918 due to the efforts of Professor Alekseev, while Professor Karpachev, a historian, claims that Voronezh University was founded by Professor Regel. Both of our professors are partly right, but the most important thing is that there is a university in Voronezh that has done a lot for Russia during Soviet times and today: among our graduates there are Nobel Prize laureates as well as laureates of the State, Lenin, and Stalin Prizes. I’m sure that every graduate of VSU feels proud today. Let’s wish our university to continue its development and remain healthy. And let’s thank the founders who moved from Yuryev to Voronezh during the hardest times and created this unique phenomenon called Voronezh University almost from scratch.
