Sergey Turistchev, Associate Professor, DSc in Mathematics, Acting Head of the Department of General Physics at the Faculty of Physics, became a “Leader of the Year” in the nomination “Science”. The award ceremony took place on 24 December.

“Such recognition means that we keep our standards high. We feel pleased and proud of the fact that the work that we conduct in the area of fundamental research, educational practices, and practical application of the research results is demanded. This became possible thanks to well-coordinated work of the whole university, the continuous support of the administration, VSU Rector Dmitry Endovitsky, and our teachers. Yet, without the commitment of the young members of our team it would have been impossible to achieve our goals!”

In September 2021, VSU won a 305 million rouble grant to conduct world-class synchrotron studies. The winner of the contest by the Ministry of Education and Science was the project “Distributed infrastructure of precision diagnostic methods in ultra-soft X-ray spectrum of synchrotron radiation for functional materials and nanoscale structures, including nano-, bio-, and hybrid materials, for the benefit of promising technologies and technical systems: from education technologies and fundamental research to practical application”. Sergey Turistchev is the supervisor of the project.

The research part of the project includes dozens of scientific topics aimed at the development of precision diagnostics of synchrotron studies of certain materials as well as structures and physical phenomena based on them. The emphasis of the project is the study of nanomaterials, structures based on them, biomaterials, and biohybrid systems.

“An important component of the research programme of VSU is collaboration with research centres, especially Kurchatov Institute whose synchrotron equipment is to be used during the studies. The cooperation with federal research centres, Udmurt Federal Research Centre and Komi Science Centre, is equally important. This means that this project is not restricted to one locality, especially in terms of modern research practices,” said Sergey Turistchev.
