From 5 to 6 February, the “Level One: Chernozem” historical fencing tournament was held in Voronezh. Ekaterina Manzhula, a 5th year student from the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences at VSU (specialising in Medical Cybernetics) took first place in the nominations “Longsword” and “Sword and Buckler”.
The tournament was organised by the Stal’ fencing school in Voronezh, which practises historical fencing, also known as HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts).
Ekaterina Manzhula has been engaged in this kind of fencing for three years. During this time, she progressed from a beginner to a professional fighter.
“For me, historical fencing is both a sport and an opportunity to learn different sword techniques from the European Middle Ages and Renaissance. I enjoy improving my skills. The club’s atmosphere is amazing,” commented Ekaterina Manzhula.
