The Publishing House of VSU has published the first part of the textbook “History of Ireland. 20th Century” by Irina Shishkina, Associate Professor at the Department of the World History and Oriental Studies at the Faculty of History. The publication presents the history of the country from the beginning of the 20th century till the declaration of independence of Ireland under the Constitution of 1937.

The book is dedicated to the episodes of Irish history which are little-known in the nation's historiography. It focuses on the complex processes of the development of the state sovereignty. It took just a few decades for Ireland to change its status: from being part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, through the years of the revolution and the adoption of the status of a dominion to the status of a sovereign state. The book examines the processes which accompanied the formation of political forces and parties in the country, the beginning of an independent domestic policy and methods of resolving external and internal conflicts in the Irish Free State.

The publication is supplemented with illustrations that allow the readers to feel the spirit of times. The book contains a reference section with biographical references to the main personalities of the studied period, excerpts from the documents, as well as a list of references available in the Regional Scientific Library of Voronezh State University. At the end of each chapter, there is a section with tasks which help understand the material better and develop professional skills.

The reviewers of the publication were Professor Lorina Repina, Associate Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Head Research Fellow at the Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Elena Polyakova, Senior Researcher at the Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Anastasia Shabunina, Researcher at the Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences. According to the reviewers, taking into account the previous historiographical experience and the principle of continuity, the manuscript provides reasoned conclusions in accordance with the latest achievements of historical science.
