The Faculty of Philology celebrates the day of Slavic writing and culture

On 21 May, the Faculty of Philology of Voronezh State University opened traditional Saints Cyril and Methodius reading. Traditionally, the Faculty holds it on the eve of the day of Slavic writing and culture. This year the event was organised in collaboration with the the “Goce Delcev” University (Shtip, Macedonia).

The first day of the event was dedicated to scientific interpretations of the issues related to Slavic writing, education, and connections between Slavic languages and cultures.

The Dean of the Faculty of Philology of the “Goce Delcev” University Jovanka Denkova talked about the historical background of the creation of the Slavic alphabet by Cyril and Methodius. An archpriest Andrei Izakar and a hegumen Timotheus (Podobedov) told the audience about the religious and moral context of the Slavic educators' mission.

The Dean of the Faculty of History of VSU, Vladimir Glaziyev, gave a talk on literacy in the Voronezh region in the XVII century and the professor of the Faculty of Philology Gennady Kovalyev talked about Polish family names in Russian literature. A lecturer of the Faculty of Philology of the “Goce Delcev” University, Kostadin Golakov, and a lecturer of the Faculty of Philology of VSU, Sophia Zabolotnaya, spoke about the issues of teaching Russian language to the Macedonian audience, and Macedonian – to the Russian audience.

On 22 May, the Faculty of Philology held the Slavic reading. Students of different years presented stage adaptations and songs in Macedonian, Serbian, Croatian, Polish, Ukrainian and Belorussian, and dialects of the Russian language.
