It is traditional here at VSU to make the start of a new academic year as bright and fun as possible. This year too, the university staff have done their best to make students remember this day for a long time.
It is common knowledge that in 2018, Voronezh State University celebrates its 100th anniversary, and now the alma mater is starting to prepare for this important event. The students “wrote” the university’s history and took part in a mass flashmob. About 150 people stood in front of the university building, shaping the phrase “VSU 100”.
The true present for the university were the students’ happy faces. The students made a wish, sent colourful balloons up into the air, and then went into the university building, where they got even more presents. Rock-n-roll by the cover band Cover Brothers, as well as dancing, created a truly festive atmosphere. The treats also had to be unusual. Young experimentalists from the Creative Science team made delicious ice cream with the help of liquid nitrogen.
On the second floor of the main building, an exhibition of portraits called VSU faces was opened to the public. Photo collages made by Igor Kopytin, Professor of the Department of Theoretical Physics, introduce us to representatives of our university’s various departments. Portraits depicting VSU researchers tell us the stories of their professional achievements, as well as their interests which have inspired them to develop their creative endeavours and scientific discoveries.
VSU lecturers, management, and staff members have appeared in the paintings by Frederic Leighton, Amedeo Modigliani, Valentin Serov, Yury Annenkov, Jan van Bijlert, James Ensor, Gustav Klimt, and the numerous faces blend into one impressive VSU portrait.
In order to create an ideal collage portrait, you do not have to be photographically precise about shapes. Sometimes, the portrait stares back at you with round spiralled yellow eyes, or surprise you with medieval clothes or a futuristic outfit. It is these separate elements linked to the photos that make up the unique, inimitable personalities of the characters.
