840 years ago, the word “Voronezh” was mentioned in Russian chronicles for the first time. The National conference “Voronezh as an Outpost of the Russian State” that was held between 15 and 16 September at the Faculty of History of Voronezh State University was dedicated to this event. The conference was held with the support of the Russian Foundation of Fundamental Research.
The reports on plenary sessions dealt with the first and the second references to Voronezh in chronicles (Yu.V. Seleznev), chronicle records and the local history of Voronezh (A.N. Akinshin), and the history of the Voronezh fortress town in the late 16th century (V.N. Glaziev). P.A. Popov analysed the natural and historic region “Voronezh” in the 8–13th century and offered a new explanation for the term “Voronezh”.
