On 12 February, the university canteens were reopened in a cafeteria format at the main university building, as well as at the Faculty of Journalism and the Faculty of Economics.
Students and teachers were glad to see that the menu now included 9 salads, 3 types of soup, and 6 main course options with various garnishes. The cafeteria also offers an assortment of sandwiches, which have become very popular. The menu also includes pastry and various desserts. During Pancake Week (between 12 and 18 February), there were also pancakes on the menu.
The canteen tries to keep the prices at a traditionally low level – from 50 to 100 roubles.
“We took into account that most students want to get a real diner, and would like to see proper tableware. There are three cafeterias now at the university. Certain dishes are cooked by VSU food counter attendants. The menu will always include main course options and some of the most popular dishes, such as vegetable salads. There will be, of course, other dishes as well. The assortment of soups, main courses, and garnishes will vary each day of the week. We’ll try to make sure that everyone finds something they like,” said Andrey Sarychev, Head of the Catering Service.
The canteen room at the main building is now divided in two parts – the cafeteria itself with the food counter, and a coffee shop for those who’d like just a quick snack. This is supposed to ensure better and faster service. At the coffee shop students can get a good-quality coffee made by a professional barista.
The project “VSU – canteens of the future” is not completed yet. It is expected to be fully implemented towards the university’s centenary.
