The Russian Science Foundation announced the winners of grant competitions for the activities “Conducting initiative research by young scientists” and “Conducting research with participation of young scientists” within the presidential programme of research projects. It was developed in 2017 on the instruction of the president of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin. The programme was established to support long-term projects of leading scientists and to create career progression paths for young researchers.

This year, according to the results of two competitions the Foundation supported 503 initiative projects of young researchers with 1.5–2 million rouble annual grants and 313 young research groups with 5 million rouble financing.

The first competition is aimed at the support of young people under 33 years old who have defended candidate dissertations. The second competition supports a new generation of research leaders, i.e. PhDs and DSc under 35 years old. The grant amounts to up to 5 million roubles annually and its duration is 3 years with the possibility to prolong it as a result of competition to 5 years. Young scientists have to propose an interesting idea and build a young research team.

Among projects supported by the Foundation are two projects by young researchers from Voronezh State University. The winner in the competition for initiative researchers was Associate Professor from the Department of Genetics, Cytology, and Bioengineering of the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences of VSU, PhD in Biology, Mikhail Syromyatnikov. He developed new approaches to evaluate the toxicity of pesticides for insect-pollinators. Senior Researcher of the Faculty of Chemistry, Irina Ledeneva, won the grant in the competition of young research teams. She proposed a project to develop blood thinners of new generation based on blood coagulability factor Xa and XIa inhibitors of linear and condensed functionally substituted hydro-quinols.
