On 15 September, a breathtaking Dragon boat race, the Petrine regatta, took place at the quay near Admiralteiskaya square. Nine out of the thirty participating teams represented the key Voronezh universities, including Voronezh State University.
“No sooner had we finished the race in August than we started preparing for this regatta. It’s the university’s centenary after all,” said a member of the VSU team, Dmitry Mokhov. “It was very difficult to gather the whole team for training sessions because many of us were out of the city and we could only gather together in the end of August to give our best.”
The provisional Head of the Department of Physical Education and Sports of the Voronezh Region, Vladimir Kadurin, and the rowing champion, Oleg Kalidov, gave speeches at the opening ceremony, which was followed by the first semi-final event. The VSU team was among the first five teams who took part in the event. They beat the teams of Voronezh State University of Engineering Technologies and the Voronezh State Art Academy, took third place, and progressed to the final. At first the VSU team led the final. However, by the end of the race our team came fourth.
The captain of the team, a student from the Faculty of Applied Mathematics, Informatics, and Mechanics, Daniil Ashurkov, believes that the team will show better results in the future:
“We did our best but I suppose the teams that were ahead of us trained for a longer time,” said Daniil. “It’s a shame we were only fourth, but the guys are very motivated and they know that they have to do better. So I think next time, we’ll make it.”
