At the beginning of December, Saint Petersburg State Electrotechnical University (ITMO) held the semi-final of the student’s teams’ world programming championship ICPC.
ITMO University has been the centre of the north-east region of the championship in Europe for many years. This year this region was transformed into “Northern Eurasia”. The teams that won the quarter-finals in October progressed to compete in the semi-final. Among them was the team from VSU including Alexander Nogikh, a second-year master's degree student of the Faculty of Computer Sciences, Alexey Zolotukhin, and Yaroslav Tishin, fourth-year students of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics, Informatics, and Mechanics. The team was awarded with third degree diplomas.
Overall, 316 teams from Russian, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kirghizia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Uzbekistan participated in the semi-final of the region “Northern Eurasia”. This year, the semi-final in Saint Petersburg was attended by Dr. Bill Poucher, professor at Baylor University and the Executive Director of ACM-ICPC. The final will take place in Portugal in 2019.
The world programming championship was launched in 1977 and has been held under the auspices of ACM. The championship is headquartered at Baylor University in Texas. The major sponsor of the competition is IBM. In 1990, the championship became international. Russian teams have been participating since 1993. The first Russian team to win the championship was the team from Saint Petersburg State University that won in 2000.
