Voronezh State University paid tribute to Zhores Alferov, an outstanding Soviet and Russian scientist, a leading expert in semiconductor physics, a 2000 Nobel Prize laureate in Physics, Vice president of the Russian Academy of Sciences, first rector of the first academic university in Russia, an honorary doctor of VSU.
VSU's researchers, administration, and students gathered in the hall of the main building.
“Zhores Alferov was a great Russian citizen, an outstanding artist, and a man of unique talents. He swam like a fish in the ocean of science. His departure is a great loss for both Russian and global scientific communities. He had a motto, a quote from a novel by Veniamin Kaverin “Two Captains”: to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield. I very much hope that this motto will be adopted by future generations”, said Evelina Domashevskaya, Head of the Department of Solid-State Physics and Nanostructures, Honoured Scientist of the Russian Federation.
The rector, Dmitry Endovitsky, told about the idea to commemorate the name of the famous scientist at VSU: “Zhores Alferov worked with us for many years. We believe that our joint laboratory with the Institute of Physics and Technology should be named after him. He was a great scientist, a true patriot, and will always remain an example to us”.
Voronezh State University offers condolences to the family and friends, and to everyone who had a pleasure to know Zhores Alferov personally.
