On 16 October, a picture exhibition by Vladimir Goncharov, a lecturer from the Faculty of Journalism, was opened in the second-floor hall of the main university building.

Vladimir Goncharov chose China as a topic for his works for a reason. He spent three years in the Chinese city of Jinan on a culture cooperation programme between Shandong University of Arts and Voronezh universities where he taught design to Chinese students. His Chinese experience gave way to a graphic art exhibition which he had been creating for a year and a half.

In the Rector’s Gallery there are 26 works by Vladimir Goncharov. Most of them were made in Jinan on Chinese paper and with the use of Chinese materials. The exhibition consists of seven series with different themes which the artist found most inspiring and surprising: “Qufu, the motherland of Confucius”, “Chinese village”, “Jinan parks”, and others. The artist decided to organise a tour around Russia. The exhibition has been presented in 16 cities: Voronezh, Lipetsk, Smolensk, Orel, Belgorod, Rostov-on-Don, Tambov, and others. It attracted a lot of interest among its visitors and critics. Today, the students and staff of Voronezh State University have a chance to see these unique works.

“Lecturers and students do not always have time to go to art exhibitions and it was my pleasure to accept the offer to demonstrate my works in the main building of VSU. It took a year and a half to create this series. China is a unique country when it comes to preserving cultural heritage. Once you get there, you can’t but fall in love with it. In the most modern cities of China you can find “islands” of the Middle Ages. I was absolutely fascinated by it and I started thinking about how I could show all this beauty to Russian people. That’s how I came up with this series of works. It only shows the smallest part of what made me feel so inspired and fascinated in China,” said Vladimir Goncharov.

VSU Rector, Dmitry Endovitsky, thanked the artist for the organisation of the exhibition and for his trust in the university:

“Today, we experienced a cultural shock. It was so beautiful and unusual. I am very glad that my colleague and a talented artist decided to open his exhibition in our university. The audience is unanimous: we totally enjoyed it.”

Vladimir Goncharov is a member of the Union of Russian Artists, a member of the Union of Designers of Russia, and an honoured art worker of the Voronezh region. He has taken part in many national and international exhibitions. He works with graphics, tapestry, and monumental art.
