On 1 November, Professor Albert Schwarz from the University of California (Davis, USA) was awarded with the academic gown and a cap of an Honorary Doctor of VSU. The official ceremony took place in the conference hall of the main university building.
Albert Schwarz is a universal mathematician, one of the scientists who introduced the concept of topology to contemporary physics and one of the discoverers of the instanton quasi-particle by mathematical methods.
He is the author of outstanding publications in the area of topology, theory of categories, and functional analysis. He has been using mathematical methods in field theory and statistical physics, has been studying topological structures of nontrivial particle-like and string-like solutions for classical motion equation, and the mathematical problems of supergravitation and the superstring theory.
Albert Schwarz has made a significant contribution to the education of mathematics in Voronezh. He was among those who initiated and created mathematical classes in the well-known school No. 58 (now, Basov gymnasium). He deserves the credit for inviting such a unique teacher as David Smorgonsky to work in this school.
