The international publishing house Springer has published the second edition of the book by scientists from Voronezh State University: Professor Sergey Kurgalin, the Head of the Department of Digital Technologies of the Faculty of Computer Sciences, and Sergey Borzunov, an associate professor from the same department. The book is entitled “The Discrete Math Workbook: a Companion Manual for Practical Study”, as part of the series “Texts in Computer Science” (Springer, 2020. – 500 p.).

The first edition of the book, released in 2018, was very popular among readers. The book has sold many copies all over the world and it has been accessed many times on the website of the Springer publishing house. Therefore, they took the decision to publish a new edition of the book.

It is based on the study courses taught by the authors at the Faculty of Computer Sciences of VSU. It stands out from similar publications thanks to the large number of problems that cover all the university's course in discrete mathematics. The authors provide answers, instructions, or detailed solutions to almost every problem. The second edition also includes test questions for each chapter.

The book uses Python as a programming language. The choice of the language is explained by its universality and its skyrocketing popularity all over the world. The content of the book is divided into two parts. The first part is dedicated to the theory and problems with solutions in “classical” discrete mathematics. The second part targets future programmers.

It deals with asymptotic analysis, the building of algorithms, including parallel algorithms which were tested with the help of the resources of VSU’s Supercomputer centre.

The book is aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers, and university lecturers. It can be used for lectures, practical and laboratory training, independent learning, and the advanced training of specialists.
