The expedition of the university’s Archaeological Museum and the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History of Voronezh State University continued the excavations of the Russian ancient settlement “Romashki 1” located in the Ramon District of the Voronezh Region. The studies were headed by Viktor Takmakov, the Head of VSU’s Archaeological Museum. Among the participants of the expedition were museum staff members, lecturers, and undergraduate and postgraduate students from the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History.
The researchers studied the remains of an above-grounding log house with a mudbrick stove and a sunk ground floor and enlarged the collection of findings. The most interesting is a baptismal cross with a crucifixion and two sliver Golden Horde dangs. They prove that the Russian settlement existed between the first half of 14th and the beginning of the 15th centuries. The obtained data makes it possible to draw an important conclusion: at the time of the Battle of Kulikovo, Russians continued to reclaim the lower reaches of the river Voronezh.
