Prior to the World Cleanup Day, which is celebrated this year on 18 September, students from the Faculty of Geography, Geology, and Tourism of VSU joined the global volunteer cleanup movement. On the World Cleanup Day the whole planet unites (over 180 countries) to clean up litter.
The students from the Faculty of Geography, Geology, and Tourism cleaned up part of the territory along the bank of the Usman River. First year students of the programme “Ecology and Natural Resource Management” together with their curator and senior students, Alexander Kryachkov, Pavel Sukhanov, Maria Chatschina, and Daria Akhmatova, cleaned up about 1 hectare of the territory. The volunteers collected about 50 waste sacks of mainly mixed waste products and recyclable materials (metal, plastic, and glass).
The event was organised by the student council of the faculty with the support of the Dean, Professor Semion Kurolapa, and Deputy Dean for Student Affairs, Maria Derevyagina.
The campaign encouraged first year students to take part in other environmental events. In the future, the volunteers plan to go to other territories around regional rivers, to give lectures, hold master classes and educational environmental campaigns for students and population.
