On 24 November, the International Linguistic Forum “Linguistics and Challenges of the Modern Paradigm of Public Relations: Interdisciplinary, Intercultural, and Interlanguage Interaction” was opened at VSU. The event is dedicated to the Year of Science and Technology and lasts for five days. The forum is aimed at the development of the interdisciplinary aspect of the issues associated with the study of intercultural and interlingual communication as well as the dialogue of cultures from the point of view of the modern social paradigm and comprehension of a set of courses (linguistics, literary criticism, translation studies, philosophy, linguodidactics, psychology, pedagogy, cultural studies, political science, sociology, etc.).
The forum offers 5 scientific platforms, each devoted to its own area: linguistics and intercultural communication issues, translation theory and practice, the prospects of language education, and the issues of multiculturalism reflected in the social and political integration.
The forum attracted great interest: more than 700 participants registered (400 teachers and 340 students) who represented universities of Russia and 19 other countries (USA, China, Great Britain, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Belarus, Mexico, Senegal, South Ossetia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Transnistria, and Donetsk People’s Republic). Russian participants represent more than 44 cities from all parts of Russia: Moscow, St Petersburg, Voronezh, Ryazan, Rostov-on-Don, Grozny, Murmansk, Novosibirsk, Pskov, Nizhny Novgorod, Ufa, Perm, Sevastopol, Orenburg, Astrakhan, Vladivostok, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Krasnoyarsk, Kaliningrad, Tolyatti, Chelyabinsk, and others.
The forum has a varied programme that includes plenary and panel meetings, public lectures, round table discussions and workshops by leading Russian and international experts in the field of linguistics, literary criticism, cultural studies, translation theory and translation teaching methods, practising translators, heads of translation agencies and research centres, linguistics experts, etc. The Forum will serve as a platform for active work and communication between students, and a scientific student conference and two competitions will be held as part of the event, including the national research projects competition for students and national translation competition named after Professor V.B. Kashkin for students.
The first day of the forum has begun. The participants were welcomed by VSU Rector, Professor Dmitry Endovitsky, and Olga Ivanova, President of the Union of Translators of Russia. Platform No. 1 named “Linguistics and intercultural communication” began its work after the plenary meeting. It is dedicated to Professor V.T. Titov, DSc in Philology, who was the Rector of Voronezh State University from 2006 to 2011.
The panel meetings were followed by two open lectures on the historical context and issues of post-editing machine translations in European universities. There was also a round table discussion about the conditions and possibilities of consensus in the interpretation of the interaction between native speakers and culture.
