Ekaterina Manzhula, a 4th year student from the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences of VSU (the “Medical Cybernetics” programme), made a mark at the Level One fencing tournament. The competition, a top-of-the-line tournament for fencing beginners, took place on 23–24 April in Saint Petersburg. The event was organised by the CounterTime fencing club in Saint Petersburg.
Catherine Manzhula won the gold medal in the women's nomination “Longsword”. The student from the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences has been practising historical fencing for a little over a year.
“For me, it was the first serious tournament. Eleven fencers took part in the nomination in which the beginners competed on equal terms with prize-winners and winners of other tournaments. My ambition for the competition was just to practise fencing and to meet new people. At first, I was nervous as I didn’t want to be shut out. But no sooner had I got to the piste than the nervousness subsided and I could breathe freely and it felt as a normal training session in my club. I have had some comeback victories when the fight was intense and the score was 6:9 against me and I shot out to a lead and won with a score of 10:9. That was exactly what happened at the tournament in Saint Petersburg,” said Ekaterina Manzhula.
