On 2 June, a Russian-Chinese seminar “Modern studies of the environmental state of soils in the Voronezh Region and the Sichuan province” was held online at VSU. It was organised by the Faculty of Geography, Geoecology, and Tourism of VSU and the Department of International Cooperation of Sichuan Institute of Nuclear Science and Geology (China).

The seminar was opened by Oleg Kozaderov, Vice-Rector for Research, Innovations, and Digitising at VSU. In his welcome speech he stressed the importance of the study of the environmental state of soils and the support of scientific cooperation between the countries. He wished the participants to be effective in their work.

Professor Anna Grigoryevskaya from the Department of Geoecology and Environmental Monitoring said in her report that it is necessary to intensify the study of types of plants that accumulate heavy metals from soils.

Ye Jialong, Deputy Head for International Cooperation of Sichuan Institute of Nuclear Science and Geology, presented a report titled “Geoecological issues related to the improvement of soil quality and their safe use”.

Nadezhda Gorbunova, Associate Professor from the Department of Ecology and Land Resources, presented a report “Biogeochemistry of microelements (heavy metals) in common black soil of the Voronezh Region”.

The topics discussed at the seminar were not limited by the issues of soil studies. Professor Sergey Matveev, Head of the Department of Forestry, Forest Measurement, and Forest Management and Head of the Carbon Polygon at Voronezh State Forest Engineering University, presented a report “The creation of a carbon polygon in the Voronezh Region”.

The second half of the meeting included the discussion of the reports and further steps to be taken in order to develop the cooperation. At the end of the seminar, Dmitry Vladimirov, Associate Professor from the Department of Recreational Geography, Country Studies, and Tourism, noted that this event was the first of the series of Russian-Chinese meetings planned for 2022.
