On 18 June, the competitive selection of Russian universities for a new federal project “Leading engineering schools” began in Moscow. 89 universities from 41 regions of the Russian Federation are competing for the right to open a new-generation engineering school as part of a partnership with high-tech Russian companies, The goal of the project is to provide promising qualified engineering specialists for the Russian economy.
VSU is also taking part in the selection. VSU leading engineering school is being created in partnership with the high-tech company INTEKHROS that produces industrial robotics.
“The innovative activities, the transfer of technologies, and commercialisation of the results of intellectual activity of the Leading engineering school will be aimed at the customer (Intekhros), who is interested in robots, and at the participants of the market of robotics development and manufacturing. VSU partners in the field of artificial intelligence will also be involved in these processes.
Engineering specialists and designs of the Leading engineering school of VSU are aimed at the development of robotics devices, production technologies, and software for the nuclear, railway, steel, mining, building, oil and gas, and defence industries. The technologies developed by the school will be used to modernise the robotics devices produced by Intekhros and to manufacture new ones. A special educational environment will be created that will have the equipment for the required competency mastering in the field of development, construction, engineering, and control of robotics devices.
The strong point of the engineering school created at VSU is the environment that has been formed over years: VSU lecturers and students act as mentors in children’s engineering schools and educational centres Kvantorum and Orion; the Roboart festival of robotics is held annually at VSU; an innovation preaccelerator “The League of Innovations” involves high school pupils in students’ projects; students complete their practical training at Intekhros and work with real production; graduates come to VSU for advanced training in the field of robotics and mechatronics,” said Dmitry Zhukalin, Head of the Department of Innovations.

The federal project “Leading engineering schools” was launched in 2022 on the initiative of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. It is aimed at the training of qualified engineering specialists for high-tech branches of economy. It is one of 42 initiatives of the Government of the Russian Federation aimed at the improvement of the quality of life and it is implemented as part of the state programme “Scientific and technological development of the Russian Federation”.
