Zoologists from Voronezh State University took part in the sixteenth conference of the Russian Entomological Society (RES), which was held between 22 and 26 August at Moscow State University. In total, over 300 professional researchers and amateur entomologists from all over Russia and neighbouring countries took part in the event. Five people from Voronezh State University (employees from the Department of Zoology and Parasitology and the “Venevitinovo” biocentre) attended the event in person. The entomologists from VSU shared their scientific achievements in the field of entomology and discussed plans with colleagues from other regions.
The reports of the participants covered various areas of Russian entomology. Professor Victor Golub, Head of the Department of Zoology and Parasitology, presented the results of many years of research dedicated to the vertical distribution and faunagenesis peculiarities of Hemiptera insects (true bugs) in the Teberda Nature Reserve. The report of Alexei Lopatin, the Director of the “Venevitinovo” biocentre, was devoted to the evolutionary substantiation of selecting pollen substitute components used to feed bumblebees. Alexander Prokin, a leading biologist from the biocentre, highlighted the state of study of diving beetles within the fauna of Russia.
At the section dedicated to dipterans, Olga Berezhnova, Associate Professor at the Department of Zoology and Parasitology, presented the results of her research of dagger flies. And Irina Budaeva, Associate Professor at the Department of Zoology and Parasitology, took part in the section “Medical and Veterinary Entomology”.
“Our university was represented at the conference by in presence and online participants who are members of the Voronezh branch of the Russian Entomological Society. The branch has existed for more than 70 years and currently operates at the Department of Zoology and Parasitology. It has over 40 participants and is one of the largest regional units of the RES. Among its members are not only zoologists from VSU, but also representatives of other universities, research institutions of the Central Black Earth Region, and some other regions of Russia,” said Evgeny Axionenko, Associate Professor at the Department of Zoology and Parasitology, the academic secretary of the Voronezh branch of the RES.
“For many decades, our department has had an entomological scientific school. It was shaped under the influence of Associate Professor Nikolai Konakov and Professor Konstantin Skufin and was developed by their students. Therefore, the staff of the department are regular participants of all major scientific conferences and events that are organised in our country. This time, the event was hosted by the Department of Entomology of Moscow State University, one of the oldest leading research centres of Russia. The organisation of the conference was at a high level. The atmosphere was warm and friendly,” said Professor Victor Golub, the Head of Department of Zoology and Parasitology of VSU, the Chairman of the Voronezh branch of RES.
