The first camp of the Reserve School of the RGS was held between 10 and 13 August at the Lapland Nature Biosphere Reserve. Olga Zhiteneva, a second year student of the Faculty of Geography, Geoecology, and Tourism, was among the participants.
The school participants improved the area of the reserve and worked on their creative projects. Students filled up the holes on the access road to Chunozerskaya estate, prepared boards and nails for the construction of nature trails, built a nature trail leading up to the mountain, mowed grass, and stored up firewood. The volunteers also created quests while media volunteers created content for the reserve.
The students had a chance to find out more about the nature of the north. They hiked along the nature trails of the Lapland Reserve and visited the Yelnyun-2 mountain and Teriberka village.
“I’m so grateful to this project for this new volunteering experience at the Lapland Reserve. Before this, I hadn’t even heard about this place. I’ve never tried this format before, and many things were a novelty for me. I was afraid that I wouldn’t become a part of the team because we were all from different cities but we quickly became friends. It was hard to say goodbye, and we promised to visit each other. I would like to thank the Russian Geographical Society for the opportunity to take part in this wonderful project and I’m grateful to the organisers for bringing together such determined, multi-sided, interesting, and kind participants of the Reserve School,” said Olga Zhiteneva.
