On 9 September, a hackathon was held in the Irkutsk Region as part of the “Digital Breakthrough. Season: Artificial Intelligence” championship. Maria Demchenko, Graduate of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics, Informatics, and Mechanics and AI/ML developer, was the winner from our region.
Earlier, in August 2022, she participated in this championship held in the Republic of Tatarstan and was among the top five leaders.
435 specialists participated in the hackathon in the Irkutsk Region. Their task was to create a solution that would analyse the work of employees in various rooms using computer vision as well as monitor the fulfilment of work regulations and job duties.
“Participation in Digital Breakthrough is interesting for me because there are exciting tasks to be solved. Both competitions were so different from each other, and they gave me a chance to learn something new. The first task which I worked on in the Republic of Tatarstan was more about the adjustment of machine learning models while the second one in the Irkutsk Region was associated with the processing of input data. I had to use various skills and knowledge but both tasks were uniquely complicated,” said Maria Demchenko, Graduate of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics, Informatics, and Mechanics of VSU.
She took first place for the solution in which she used computer vision tools, detection models, and algorithmic approaches. The created algorithm allows highly precise recognition of people and the direction of their movements. The detection algorithm helps to identify the position of people and things in video with a low level of error.
“It was an interesting experience for me, and my goal was not winning but developing some ready working solution of the problem that I can use in other projects as well,” said Maria Demchenko.
