On 29 October, representatives from VSU took part in an international online workshop on “Research to Improve Soil Quality and Their Safe Use”. It was organised by the Department of International Projects of Sichuan Institute of Nuclear Geology and the Faculty of Geography, Geoecology, and Tourism of VSU. Wang Xiaogang, Deputy Director of Sichuan Institute of Nuclear Geology, and Oleg Kozaderov, Vice-Rector of VSU, addressed the workshop participants with opening remarks. In their opening statements, the scientists noted the good results of joint work between Russian and Chinese soil scientists in 2022. They also emphasised the need to develop the partnership in the future.

“I would like to note the consistently high scientific level of the events, an in-depth and trusting communication between the parties, and a strong focus on achieving results. This year, Russian and Chinese soil scientists have been able to exchange experience in studying soil contamination by heavy metals and to discuss best practices in soil treatment. I believe this cooperation is mutually beneficial and has great potential for continuation”, commented Oleg Kozaderov.

Ye Jiaolong, Deputy Head of the Department of International Projects of Sichuan Institute of Nuclear Geology, and Dmitry Vladimirov, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Geography, Geoecology, and Tourism of VSU, reported on the work of the Russian-Chinese consortium since the beginning of the year. Irina Cherepukhina, Associate Professor of the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences at VSU, presented a report on “The effect of long-term use of cereal straw and micromycetes on zinc exchange compounds in leached black soils”. Ma Chanhua, senior engineer at Sichuan Institute of Nuclear Geology, presented a report on “Reclamation and use of soils contaminated with heavy metals”.

During the round table discussion held after the presentations, Nadezhda Gorbunova and Arkadiy Gromovik, associate professors of the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences, also presented their reports. The speakers stressed the importance of maintaining the high publication activity of the consortium and expressed the hope for joint field research in the future.
