On 3 November, the exhibition “Talent multiplied by hard work” opened in the second floor hall of the main building of VSU. The exhibition was dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Nikolay Chernyshov, professor of the Faculty of Geology of VSU. Nikolay Chernyshov, DSc in Geology and Mineralogy, was an Associate Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Head of the Department of Mineralogy, Petrology, and Geochemistry, and Honoured Scientist of the Russian Federation. The scientist discovered nationally important nickel deposits in the Voronezh Region. His opinion was always authoritative for the university community, he chaired the Council of Elders of the university.
The exhibition was opened by Oleg Kozaderov, Vice-Rector for Research, Innovations, and Digitising at Voronezh State University and Head of the Department of Physical Chemistry. Colleagues and students of Nikolai Chernyshov spoke about the personality of the researcher and teacher, as well as the fact that his work at the Faculty of Geology is continued by his students. Marina Chernyshova, Professor at the Department of Mineralogy, Petrology, and Geochemistry, emphasised that Chernyshov’s private collection of scientific books was handed over to his “home” department: now students can use its unique items Also, opening speeches were made by Professor Viktor Nenakhov, Dean of the Faculty of Geology at VSU; Professor Alexander Plaksenko, Chair of the Voronezh Regional Branch of ROSGEO, full member of the Academy of Mining Sciences, Alexander Albekov, Head of the Department of Mineralogy, Petrology, and Geochemistry at VSU, Chair of the Voronezh Branch of the Russian Mineralogical Society, and Evelina Domashevskaya, Consulting Professor at the Department of Solid State Physics and Nanostructures and Chief Researcher of the department.
Nikolay Chernyshov was the founder of the academic and scientific school of platinum metal researchers. He trained 7 scientists with a doctoral degree in Geology and Mineralogy and 35 holders of PhD in Geology and Mineralogy. Professor Chernyshov deservedly represented Russian science at many international conferences, published more than 750 works, including 36 monographs.
In 1955 Nikolay Chernyshov graduated from the Faculty of Geology of VSU, and in 1958 he returned to the university as a lecturer. From 1968, Nikolay Chernyshov was Head of the Department of Mineralogy and Petrology.
From 1993 to 2005, he was the scientific supervisor of the national Russian Platinum programme and head of the Voronezh Branch of Institute of Geology of Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy, and Geochemistry of Russian Academy of Sciences.
