On 6 December, Basov Readings were held in the auditorium of the main building of VSU. It was a joint event of Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (LPI), National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (Moscow Engineering Physics Institute), and VSU. The scientific event was held on the 100th anniversary of the birth of Nikolay Basov, Soviet and Russian physicist and Nobel laureate. On that day, scientists from all over the country presented thematic works dedicated to the professor’s legacy.
Basov Readings were attended by VSU students and schoolchildren of Voronezh. The event started with the welcoming speech by Oleg Grishaev, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Social Development. He noted that although Nikolay Basov was born in the Tambov Province, the famous physicist was closely associated with Voronezh. He graduated from Secondary School No. 13 in Voronezh, which was later replaced by School No. 58 (now, Basov gymnasium).
“It is interesting that Voronezh State University is associated with such great scientists as Nikolay Basov or Pavel Cherenkov. Among us today are leading physicists, our lecturers, as well as future scientists. I am sure that it is the physicists who are the pride of Voronezh State University,” emphasised Oleg Grishaev.
The programme of the meeting included presentations by leading experts from Voronezh and Russia: Professor Sergey Savinov from LPI, Andrey Naumov (LPI), Associate Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor Andrey Kuznetsov from MEPhI, and Vladimir Zvorykin, leading researcher from LPI. Oleg Ovchinnikov, Dean of the Faculty of Physics at VSU, addressed the participants of the event.
“The readings are dedicated to the works of Basov, as well as to other scientists who chose to study laser spectroscopy, nonlinear optics, and ultrashort pulse physics. This should become a good tradition. I hope that Basov Readings at Voronezh State University will become an established tradition,” said Oleg Ovchinnikov.
