On 3 February, the Department of English Language for Sciences Faculties in cooperation with the VSU I.A. Sternin Communication Studies Centre held the ninth national research and practice conference with international participation “Comparative methods in linguistic studies. Interlinguistic and intralinguistic comparison”. The event was held online via Zoom. From this year, the conference is called “Sternin Readings” and the plenary meeting started with a minute of silence in tribute to the memory of Iosif Sternin.
Among the participants of the conference were representatives of universities in Voronezh, Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Saratov, Kursk, Borisoglebsk, Novosibirsk, Nazran, Elets, Kazan, Saransk, Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), and Minsk (Belarus).
The plenary meeting saw reports by scientists from Voronezh State University and Saint Petersburg State University, as well as from the American University in Central Asia (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan). About forty presentations were given during the three sections of the conference. They were dedicated to comparative semantic studies, comparative studies in psycholinguistics, comparative studies of national conceptual frameworks and communicative behaviour, comparative studies in grammar, phonetics, and text, and comparative studies and translation problems.
Besides well-known scholars, the conference has always been attended by young researchers who are taking their first steps in science. This year was no exception: bachelor’s and master’s degree students from Voronezh, Moscow, and Saransk presented the results of their research. Their works were highly praised by the participants of the conference.
The materials of the conference were published in the 20th anniversary issue of the scientific journal “Comparative research 2023”.
