The Department of Archaeology and Ancient History at the Faculty of History of Voronezh State University prepared and published a collective monograph, “Archaeology of the Central Black Earth Region (Don)”. The publication was edited by Professor Aleksandr Medvedev, Head of the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History.
This is a fundamental study that summarises the work of VSU archaeologists over the past seven decades. The book covers practically all “archaeological period” in the history of our region, represented by more than half a hundred archaeological cultures.
It focuses on the archaeology of the Middle and Upper Don from the time of its settlement by people (from about 40,000 years ago to the 15th century, shortly before our region became part of Russia). This approach, for the first time, made it possible to show the depth of the history of the region and the multitude of peoples and cultures which succeeded each other during thousands of years. This demonstrates the richness of our archaeological heritage.
