Between 26 and 29 April, the first national sports programming competition among students took place in Voronezh. Over 300 students from more than 30 universities of 18 Russian regions participated in the competition. Voronezh was presented by four universities: Voronezh State University, Voronezh State Technical University, Russian Air Force Military Educational and Scientific Centre “Air Force Academy”, and Academy of the Federal Penitentiary Service. Four teams, two for each discipline, represented VSU.

The competition in both disciplines was held between teams, which traditionally consisted of three people in algorithmic programming and no more than 5 people in product programming.

The competition in algorithmic programming lasted two days, 5 hours each, and the teams were offered to solve eight algorithmic tasks during the first day and twelve tasks during the second day. The task had to be solved as a program in any programming language that provided correct output data for the input data, and the tasks were checked automatically using a series of tests. The solution that passed all the tests was considered correct.

The competition in product programming was held in the form of a hackathon, and the teams were given 36 hours in a row to prepare a programming solution for a certain case. This time the task was to develop an application for the automation of the activities of the Federation of Sports Programming. The developed solutions were defended and evaluated by the jury according to the following criteria: performance, compliance with technical task requirements, code quality, presentation, and development potential. The teams were assessed by the number of points given by the jury.

In algorithmic programming VSU team made up of students from the Faculty of Computer Sciences Nikita Berezhnov, Maxim Novotochinov, and Yulia Shishko (coached by senior teacher Dmitry Solomatin) solved 15 tasks out of 20 and won bronze medals. In product programming students from the Faculty of Computer Sciences took 7th place among 27 teams.

“Although programming competitions are widespread in Russia both among schoolchildren and students and are regularly held by many universities, this event was special. Last year, sports programming was included into the National Register of Sports by the Ministry of Sports of Russia, and this competition became the first in Russia held in the disciplines Algorithmic Programming and Product Programming. The success of students from the Faculty of Computer Sciences confirmed the high level of teaching at the faculty and became a great result of many years of methodical work with talented students,” said Alexander Krylovetsky, Dean of the Faculty of Computer Sciences.

The competition was organised by the Federation of Sports Programming of Russia.
