From 6 to 30 April, the 10th Interregional Translators’ Competition (German) was held. Students from Saratov, Rostov-on-Don, Voronezh, Kazan, and Moscow took part in it. Fourth year students of the Faculty of Romance and Germanic Philology (specialising in Translation and Interpreting) took prize-winning places at the competition. Veronika Burkova took first place in the Prose category, Kristina Kondratieva won first place in the Publicistic category, and Daria Tarasova took third place in the Poetry category.

“Participating in the translation competition is not only interesting, but also very informative. Such contests help to discover oneself from a new side and, perhaps, to uncover qualities that one has never thought about before,” commented Daria Tarasova.

“It was my first experience of translating a fictional text. Before that, I had only tried my hand at translating journalistic texts. Fiction is much more interesting to work with as it allows for more freedom of expression. However, there are also certain difficulties, such as phraseological units or expressions that you have to find equivalents for in your native language. Overall, I enjoyed the competition and will definitely take part next time,” said Veronika Burkova.

“It has always been very exciting to take part in translation competitions. The competition allows you not only to compare yourself with other participants, but also to understand what you still need to work on. Translation of journalistic texts is in great demand, as the media play an important role in modern society. One of the main difficulties faced by translators is the emotional and evaluative language in many articles. Thanks to competitions, you can try your hand at translating such texts and gain valuable experience. Therefore, I advise everyone not to be afraid and definitely take part,” commented Kristina Kondratieva.
